Software.

Megatrends like connectivity, autonomous driving and mobility services are leading to a continued increase in the complexity of automotive software. Our Software team covers the entire software development cycle, including process and infrastructure development. We develop and industrialise control unit software and create scalable, automated, state-of-the-art infrastructures through our development of processes, methods and tools. Our software specialists combine agile development methods with years of expertise in automotive software engineering.

SERIES DEVELOPMENT.

Our experts are integrated at an early stage in the overall automotive series development process and oversee software development in accordance with current guidelines and standards (A-SPICE, ISO 26262, UNECE WP.29). We have many years’ experience in the application of methods for model-driven, code-centric and embedded software development. In relation to software engineering, we focus on efficient use of control unit resources and develop hardware-integrated software solutions in line with individual requirements. In addition, we take care of the commissioning and parametrisation of control unit software and the development of functions, algorithms and software, including validation, for the domains of drive systems, ADAS/AD and electrics/electronics.

Thomas Klepp

Thomas – Software developer.

If you have any questions or encounter any challenges in relation to software development, Thomas is the man to see. After completing a degree in electrical engineering and working as a freelance software developer in the automotive industry for 23 years, he joined ASAP in 2020. Thanks to his many years of experience, Thomas provides stimulating ideas for his colleagues working in development. Using model-based development, they sketch out a suitable functional model, which is later transferred into a source code. “This source code determines, for example, the software functions in a car’s control unit.” Thomas recommends that new recruits to the Software team complete certain courses on topics such as basic programming skills and programming tools. It’s also important to know how a control unit works and how it is structured. Thomas suggests a training course on embedded software to help with this.

PROCESSES | METHODS | TOOLS.

Our ASAP specialists develop new automotive processes and offer advice and support from the very outset through to their introduction. We also assist with the development and customisation of automotive tools, frameworks and toolchains. In relation to DevOps, we conceptualise and implement continuous integration, testing and deployment (CI/CT/CD) pipelines. We support automotive series development with our proprietary automation solution: the Process Automation Kit (PAK).

VIRTUAL VALIDATION.

We offer virtual validation of all functions as part of our all-inclusive service package. This includes developing and constructing co-simulation platforms for model-in-the-loop (MIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL) and virtual control units (vECU). We also develop virtual integration platforms for domain control units. In addition, we offer support as a solution-oriented partner in the development of tool chains to validate functions using environmental simulation.

Manuel - Project manager.

“I’ve been interested in software engineering since I was a teenager. I trained as an electronics technician, which gave me the motivation to study electrical engineering and information technology. For my internship, I wanted to find an employer in the field of automotive software engineering that was tackling the challenges of the future and making targeted investments in megatrend topics. That’s how I came across ASAP. In addition to their fascinating projects, it was the people above all that impressed me. So, after completing my bachelor’s thesis on the DIAS project, I joined ASAP as a software engineer working on SIL platforms. In my second year working as a developer, I was given responsibility for various projects in the field of virtual validation. Based on my performance and personal targets, ASAP offered me the opportunity to participate in an internal talent promotion programme. It’s important to me that my employer facilitates my personal and professional development,” says Manuel.

MODELLING | SIMULATION.

Verifying and validating components and systems before they exist in the real world, we provide concept development, modelling and simulation services, including for components in electrical drive systems, wire harnesses and sensor nets, which enables us to construct digital twins. Our experts also have extensive expertise in mapping thermal, mechanical and electrical system behaviour using physical system models and simulations. In addition, we draw on measurement and simulation data to apply and optimise models.

Thomas - Team coordinator.

From the e-motor to the power electronics and the battery, the components in an electric drive system need to be perfectly coordinated mechanically, thermally and electromagnetically. Thomas simulates the interaction between these aspects before a component even exists in physical form – because he works in a world of theoretical models. He develops these models by combining physical models with data-based statistical techniques to produce complex interrelationships. What’s more, his field of work is expanding even further. “In the future, we will increasingly use machine learning methods in this field – that is, applied artificial intelligence.” Upon joining the ASAP Group in 2016, Thomas first worked as a developer. Today, he is a team coordinator in the Modelling / Simulation division. His team brings together experts from different scientific and engineering disciplines, such as electrical engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, artificial intelligence and CGI.
